Wilfred Owen shows sympathy in this text by using tense. In the first paragraph he starts it in the present tense which makes us see that he is lonely, isolated and uncomfortable. “He sat in a wheeled chair waiting…” This tells us that he is inactive and struggles to move around, it also shows that his life is controlled by doctors and other people. Another sentence in the poem “He thought of jewelled hilts” this conveys that he thought war was going to be fun and enjoyable. “He will spend a few sick years in institutes” when we hear this we feel sympathy for him and he feels like he’s been lied to and has been dragged to hell and false sense of security.
