The History of the ECCE
This assignment is about the history of the early childhood care and education in Ireland and how it has developed over the years.During this assignment we will look at a number of different topics and what each of them have attributed to the childcare sector in Ireland. It is with the hope that by the end of this you will have a better understanding of the ecce sector and the different services it provides.
Preschool education did not exist nor was it provided in Ireland until the 1980s – 1990s. This was mainly due to the fact that majority of mothers did not work outside the home. If childcare was needed it was provided by a member of the family. Childminders would have also been available but due to the size of most families and the lack of finance in the homes it was something that a working class family could not afford.
At the time the marriage bar stated that a women who worked in the public sector had to leave her job as soon as she was married this enabled them to be stay at home wives and mothers. However the ban was lifted in 1957 for all female primary school teachers, but is was not until 2973 before the ban was lifted completely thus allowing women to work in the public sector after they were married and had children.
