“Trees suddenly took on detail, filled his whole field of vision with green, and knew he would hit and die, would die, but his luck, held and just as he was to hit he came into an open lane a channel of fallen trees a wide place leading to the lake”.
As Brian was about to crash he saw a bunch of trees which took place in Central Canada somewhere in the North woods.

Asking Questions

“It was a small plane a Cessna 406- a bush plane- and the engine was so loud, so roaring and consuming and loud, that it ruined any chance for conversation”.
If it was so inconvenient and uncomfortable or even being miserable on a terrible 1983 plane. Why couldn’t Brian go on an actual airline which is more 10x more safer and if Brian can only think of his parents divorce his dad should of let him on an airline, or atleast a safer and better plane that isn’t single engined. If a pilot had an heart attack on an airline there would be 4-6 driving the plane so the entire doesn’t go down and kill everyone inside of it.

Making Predictions
“Going to die, Brian thought. Going to die, gonna die, gonna die- his whole brain screamed it in the sudden silence.”
“Brian builds a selter and then finds food and starts a fire with his hatchet by creating sparks with it.”
I predict in the novel that Brian is a different teenager from any others. Brian manages to make a sustainable shelter, finds food, and even make a fire. He also only 1 item, which was a hatchet. A normal person has a home a shopping mall to go to. Brian also manages to make a fireplace with his limited materials.

“Brian Robeson stared out the window of the small plane at the endless green northern wilderness below. It was a small plane a Cessna 406- a bush plane- and the engine was so loud, so roaring and consuming and loud, that it ruined any chance for conversation”.
Imagine Brian Robeson staring out of the window of the plane and he could not talk over the loud old engine.

PG 179
1 inference about characters
“Brian had gained immensely in his ability to observe what was happening and react to it; that would last him all his life.”
Brian became much more thoughtful as well, and from that time on he would think slowly about something before speaking it out loud. This shows that Brian is clever and smart by mostly respect everything around him and himself.

PG 128
1 inference about characters
“To his right, at the base of the rock bluff, there were piles of smaller rocks that had fallen from the main chunk, splinters and hunks, from double-fist size to some as large as his head. He spent an afternoon carrying rocks to the beach and making what amounted to a large pen for holding live fish-two rock ‘arms’ that stuck out fifteen feet into the lake and curved together at the end. Where the arms came together he left an opening about two feet across, then he sat on the shore and waited.”
Brian is now being resourceful and believes he can survive in the forest for a few days before someone finds him he thinks. He didn’t spend a single minute to rest, his top priority was survival in his mind.

PG 51
1 personal connection
“He had to have some kind of shelter. No make that more: he had to have some kind of shelter and had to have something to eat”.
This moment in the novel reminds me of the old days in elementary school. I went to many wilderness survival trips. This reason is because in Brian’s situation he is stuck and stranded in the forest needing things to survive and when I went on the survival trips the instructors taught us how to be resourceful the plants we can eat, shelter and animals in order to survive.

PG 115
1 Symbol
“He knew the wolf now, as the wolf knew him and nodded to it, nodded and smiled. The wolf watched him for another time, another part of his life, then it turned and walked effortlessly up the hill.”

This is a symbol of nature. While Brian is stranded in the middle of nowhere in the north woods in Canada, he encounters a pack of wolves and Brian and the pack of wolves exchange a nod of respect meaning that the wolf accepted Brian to be in the wolf knowing that Brian is friendly as well. They both nod at each other and Brian smiles at the wolves and the animals accept Brian’s presence of being in the forest.

(Symbol)
“I must make a home for the sparks, he thought. A perfect home or they won’t stay, they won’t make fire. He started ripping the bark, using his fingernails at first, and when that didn’t work he used the sharp edge of the hatchet, cutting the bark in thin slivers, hairs so fine they were almost not there.”
It symbolizes hope and success, because he can use it to keep himself alive until he is rescued by making fires, shelters and a weapon for self defense.

Visualization
“He thought of dragging in wood to make a wall of the overhang, and picked up one piece to pull up, but his arms were too weak and he knew then that i wasn’t just the crash and injury to his body and head, it was also that he was weak from hunger.”
I can imagine Brian dragging the wood in pain. Brian looks confused and probably asking questions in his mind how to build and survive.

PG 12
Sorry this would the only thing I could relate
1 connection to the world
“The plane lurched again hit more turbulence, and Brian felt the nose drop.
This reminded me, the time in March 2017 a private jet flipped upside down and fell 10,000 but did not crash, due to extreme turbulence that no one has ever seen before. The plane was then flying inverted which was pretty strange and cool.

3
PG 117
Climax
“The plane passing changed him. The disappointment cut down and made him new he was not the same and would never again like he had been. That was one of the true things, the new things, he would not let death in again.
When the plane flies overhead without noticing Brian he became the “New Brian” after the suicide attempt. He was transformed to a better person and determines his heart to never never let death tempt again.

Prediction
“By the end of that day. When it becomes dark and lay next to the fire with his stomach full of fish and grease from the meat smeared around his mouth, he could feel new hope building in him.”
With new hope Brians luck will change. I think he will try new survival strategies and we expect them to work. He thought of suicide but he said no which saved him in the long run.

Metaphor
“He had taken the scraps back to the water with the thought they might work for bait, and the other fish came by the hundreds to clean them up. He could take his pick of them. Like a store, and he thought.”
The fishing is so easy that it was like shopping for fish.

Plot Resolution
“The pilot cut the engine, opened the door, and got out, balanced, and stepped forward on the float to hop onto the sand. I hear your emergency transmitter.”
The Pilot resolution happens when Brian gets home all his troubles are finally gone. Another pilots receives his emergency transmitter and saves him.

PG 145

Theme
“The most important rule of survival, which has that feeling sorry for yourself didn’t work. Not hope that he would be rescued — that was gone. But hope in his knowledge though hope he thought, he thought that night. I Am full of hope.”
The theme in Hatchet is about perseverance and hope because Brain’s ability to keep going and there’s times where he becomes very depressed, suicide and hate thoughts come, but Brian just keeps moving forward.
3
PG 150
Thematic Question
“Too many gut cherries Brian says, he crawls out of the shelter and covers his vomit and diarrhea with sand. He sees his reflection in the water and realizes how bad he looks, he slaps the water and feels like he is in a pit, a dark pit with no way out. Brian begins to feel sorry for himself.”
“To his right, at the base of the rock bluff, there were piles of smaller rocks that had fallen from the main chunk, splinters and hunks, from double-fist size to some as large as his head. He spent an afternoon carrying rocks to the beach and making what amounted to a large pen for holding live fish-two rock.”
How can perseverance and hope play in survival? After Brian survives the crash he learns that self pity doesn’t accomplish anything and only wastes time and he took the time to improve the situation rather than being hopeless and self pity. But with perseverance and hope he manages to survive. With all respect Brian then doesn’t give up hope.

(Point of view)
“Too much. Too much. His mind screamed in horror and he slammed back and was sick in the water, sick so that he choked on it and tried to breathe water and could have ended there, ended with the pilot where it almost ended when they first arrived except that his legs jerked. It was instinctive, fear more than anything else.”
The point of view the author writes Hatchet in is Third Person. The third person narrator tells the story and talks about Brian’s deepest thoughts and feelings and how Brian acts as well as the animals.

(Types of Conflict)
“Unbelievable riches. He could not believe the contents of the survival pack. The night before he was so numb with exhaustion he couldn’t do anything but sleep. All day in the water had tired him so much that, in the end, he had fallen asleep sitting against his shelter wall, oblivious even to the mosquitos, to the night to anything.
Brian called a survival pack unbelievable riches because number one is surviving not dying and if he gets his hands on any material he would be happy. The type of conflict is man vs survival. The protagonist which is Brian needs to fight through one and a half months of pain living in the forest trying to survive.
