Software Defined Networking (SDN)
Software defined network has emerged as a promising network architecture in the past three years. SDN includes various technologies designed to make the network greater agile and versatile in assist of server virtualization and contemporary information centers storage infrastructure. The SDN architecture is a cost effective, dynamic, adaptable and manageable thereby making it the suitable solution to the dynamic nature of the networking applications with at least a higher bandwidths.

more efficiency and flexibility. Thus this has led to traditional networking equipment’s using the
architectural features to make it a top-notch enterprise. This trend has been greatly adapted by
social networks such as Facebook where it provides the flexibility and scalability needed for
functioning. The technological improvements in software defined networking has allowed for diverse benefits to network designs and management i.e. automated load balancing, bandwidth provisioning, scalability of network resources in accordance with the data and applications requirements.
Network computing and storage are the areas that have been the biggest beneficiaries of virtualization and introduction of SDN has made the management of all the network resources easier. SDN has the potential of revolutionizing data centers through provisions of a centralized control of the virtualized networks. Software defined networking is critical in cases of carrier service providers as it provides on demand bandwidth that allows for carrier links to request for additional bandwidth in cases where it is required besides bandwidth calendaring and WAN optimization. For virtualized networks and cloud based centers, SDN provides higher turn around periods for the development of a segregated network. Use of software defined networking policies allows for network monitoring and access control experiences in managing enterprise networks.
With much focus in digitalization, we anticipate further progression in this field of network design and management. However, the advancements place unknown challenges especially with computer security which call for research to design network less susceptible to unauthorized access to curb and prevent the current trending cyber security challenge and at the same time deliver satisfactory technological services to the general public.
