INTRODUCTION
Definition
A dictionary is a collection of words arranged alphabetically which includes information on definition, usage, etymologies, pronunciation and translation.

It`s also a book or an electronic resource that lists the words of a language in alphabetically order and gives their meaning, equivalent words in a different language and also information about their origin and usage. It`s also referred to as a wordbook.

TYPES OF DICTIONARIES
General dictionary
A general dictionary contains words from all spheres of human activities and all areas of the life of the speakers of the language.

In this dictionary each word may have multiple meanings.

Specialized dictionary
It is a dictionary that deals with a specific area or field of study.

According to (Manual of Specialized Lexicography) “A specialized dictionary is a dictionary that focuses upon a specific subject or field of study”. It`s also known as a technical dictionary.

Monolingual dictionary
It`s also called an explanatory dictionary. It gives additional information for example grammar and pronunciation.

They are meant for the native speakers of a language. Advanced Learners Dictionary is a good example of a monolingual dictionary.

Bilingual dictionary
Bilingual dictionary is a specialized dictionary used to translate words or phrases from one language to another.

Bilingual dictionary usually consist of two sections, each listing words and phrases of one language alphabetically with their transition.

USES OF A DICTIONARY
Used to check definition`s and meaning of words.

A dictionary is used to give meanings of words which may be difficult for one to understand.

Pronunciation
Dictionaries provide phonetic symbols for every word.

This guides the learner in providing efficient ways of pronouncing words.

Parts of speech
Every word in a dictionary is assigned a specific part of speech. This helps the learner in identifying parts of speech in a word.

The part`s of speech include nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, interjections and many others.
Spelling
Dictionaries provide correct spelling of words.

This is important to the learners because certain English words are very difficult to guess the correct spelling, for example the word onomatopoeia.
Synonyms
Dictionaries provide word`s that means the same as the defined word.

For example the word begin has several synonyms like start and commerce.

Antonyms
A dictionary provides words that have contrasting or opposite meaning to the word being defined, for example the word boy-girl, dead-alive.

CONCLUSION
Dictionaries have continued to be of very importance both in specific fields and also generally.

From day to day more improved and advanced dictionaries are being incorporated in the educational system`s, which ensures all learners needs are met.
