LOUIS • This weekend is the annual “Ride of the Century,” when motorcyclists by the hundreds convene in St. Louis and turn the highways into their virtual playground for high-speed wheelies and other daring maneuvers.
It is the bane of police officers trying to corral any lawbreakers — and can be a menacing sight for motorists unwittingly caught up in the frenzy.
Since Thursday, motorcyclists began arriving in vans from Texas, Michigan and elsewhere, some hauling their motorcycles by trailer, to the parking lot behind Shady Jack’s biker bar on North Broadway. They expect their numbers to swell by noon Saturday. Previous rides have drawn 3,000 motorcyclists.
