Competency Differences between Different levels of Education in Nursing
Nursing profession is one of the most noble off all. Also nursing is called an art and everybody who enter this field has a calling and passion to help people in the most difficult circumstances and moments of their life. To understand what exactly is nursing we have to look at it’s definition. Nursing is a profession which provides services essential for the health maintenance and recovering by attending the needs of sick persons. For a more elaborated and profound meaning of what nursing is American Nursing Association defines nursing as: ” The protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities; prevention of illness and injury; facilitation of healing; alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, groups, communities, and populations.” (Nursing World Website, n.d., para. 1).
The nursing profession has two aspects that are bind together. Nursing is about being kind and caring for a person but in the same time is about medical and technical knowledge. One of the essential part in being a nurse is to be compassionate. Being aware and having sympathy for someone who is suffering without any judgment, this is the foundation of compassion. For the nurses this means so much more. As a nurse you are in the front line and you are doing everything that stand in your hand for the patient. With all this you actually get to do something that makes a difference in a person life.Compassion is so important that can lessen the patient’s suffering.
As a nurse in every day work you have responsibilities and you need to make important decisions. Many times it requires to take quick decisions in a medical situation. The most crucial thing is to maintain your calm. Great nurses are those who know to be calm in difficult situations but also education plays an essential role here.Confidence in yourself grow through knowledge. Whenever you master the skills you will feel confident when it comes to make a decision in an emergency situation. The nursing field can be challenging and in the same time demanding emotionally and physically. But for those who are dedicated in caring for others the rewards are greater then the challenges.
For a nurse to have all this qualities above and to acquire all the knowledge she/he needs for practicing, the need for education is essential. The levels that an nurse can acquire through education are Associate degree, Baccalaureate degree, Master degree and Doctorate. The two of them that we are interested in are Associate degree and Baccalaureate degree. It is difficult to differentiate between this two levels of nursing because both of them require to pass the same test in order to practice.” Associate degree is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study intended to usually last two or three years” (Wikipedia). “A bachelor’s degree or baccalaureate is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study lasting three to seven years”(Wikipedia).
There are to main differences between this to degree levels: the educational curriculum and the quality of care given to the patients. The associate degree as I mention above is a two year program that prepare nurse to apply technical and clinical skills upon graduation. The bachelor degree is four years of education and builds up on the foundation which is associate degree. In the BSN program nurses are taught to think at a different manner. The levels of learning it is raised by introducing psychosocial, ethical, legal, evidence based nursing in the curriculum. The BSN programs take the AAS program out of there box and opens a new world with new horizons. Also another description that came in my mind it is a image of a mountain that you have to escalate. You start form a point which is at the base and keep climbing, and learn step by step how to escalate, until you reach the top. I did not reach the top but looking forward to get there.
Another difference between Associate and Bachelor degree that I mention above is the quality given to the patients. Education has a strong and important impact on a nurses proficiency
