“By The River” by Steven Herrick is a verse novel book that shows us the main character, Harry, and his struggles, such as of love, loss and growing up. The book uses poems to hook the reader in and uses other multiple techniques to describe the theme of the story. There were many moods Steven Herrick used in this story, happiness and humorous were all in this book the main mood was grief.

Greif was the main mood and key theme. It was also one of the most important things in the story. It highlighted the fact that Harry was distressed and scared after the loss of a loved one, his mum and Linda.
